Study Helps Explain Why Low-Calorie Diets May Increase Life Span
Research has suggested that very low-calorie diets may increase life expectancy in animals, and now a new study in humans provides some important clues as to why this may occur.
In the new study, individuals who had higher metabolic rates — the amount of energy the body uses for normal body functions — were more likely to die early from natural causes than those who had lower metabolic rates.
The new findings appear in the .
Higher metabolic rates may accelerate the natural aging process via the production of damaging free radicals.

April 21, 2011 — Adding a dietary fiber derived from seaweed to a meal-replacement drink may reduce feelings of hunger by 30%, a team of industry researchers reports.
Researchers from Unilever’s Research and Development in the Netherlands compared the effects on hunger after drinking a meal-replacement drink with the fiber, alginate, at two different strengths and without it.
The higher concentration alginate drink reduced hunger longest — up to nearly five hours after drinking it.
“We didn’t measure calorie intake, but you would anticipate that would be translated to a relevant reduction in calorie intake,” says study co-researcher Sheila Wiseman, PhD.
She cannot estimate when the new drink will be on the market.
Two Hand Pinch Swings A Guest Post by Kris Wragg
There are many variations of pinch movements than can be done to increase the strength of the thumb and fingers. Many of these variations are quite common with grip athletes such as loose pinching plates, the euro pinch (or equivalent) and the pinching of odd objects whether wide or narrow.
One movement that doesnt seem to be quite common is the pinch swing. The movement effectively combines the kettlebell / dumbbell swing movement with a two hand pinch.
The pinch swing is good for building up hand and forearm endurance as well as hitting the muscles in many different ways as the velocity of the weight changes throughout the movement.
