Whole Grains Could Prevent High Blood Pressure

Men who eat whole grains may be less likely to develop high blood pressure.

Whole grains, like rolled oats and barley, aren’t pulverized until all nutritional value has been beaten out of them, like refined grains, or that box overpriced of “Captain Sugar Puffs.”

Experts say there is evidence that whole grains help lower blood pressure in women, but little information about grains and men’s hearts.

To investigate the affect of whole grains on men’s health, researchers looked at 31,684 men; who did not have high blood pressure, cancer or cardiovascular disease.

After 18 years, 9,227 men developed high blood pressure, but those eating the most whole grains—roughly 52 grams each day—had 19% less risk of hypertension.

Whole grains still retain their bran and germ, which contain nutrients like Vitamin B and fiber, whereas refined grains are mostly endosperm, i.e. carbohydrates.

Published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers found the link between whole grains and lower blood pressure remained even after considering men’s other lifestyle factors, such as fruit and vegetable intake and activity level.

Its likely men eating more whole grains maintain healthier body weights.
