This past week I have been suggesting various ways to relieve stress which you can implement within the context of your lifestyle. Hopefully any one of these ideas can benefit you during this busy holiday season, especially when stress can get the best of you and cause you to be “naughty” with overeating.
Be “nice” to yourself. Here are some ways:
- Do you have someone in your life who you know that absolutely nothing seems to faze him/her? My favorite mantra is “Well, whatever.” if something small takes you off guard, adopt that idea or something simple like that. “Let go” of the small things in life that really don’t matter in the end.
- Another phrase I like is “acting as if” especially if you are feeling like nothing is going right. “How would you really like to feel when life throws you a curve? Pretend like you really are doing ok instead of feeling frustrated or overwhelmed.
- Note: Don’t allow “acting as if” to become an ongoing habit because your feelings really do ultimately tell you what you need in life and you can’t always just ignore them either. In this case some venting with a good friend or writing in a journal may be more appropriate. This too of course can help with stress.
- If you can take a power nap, do it! I’ve been know to take little cat naps after eating my lunch in the car. Even a short 20 minute nap can revitalize you!
- Wake up with a hug. Literally sit up in bed, bend your knees and then hug your body for a full 20-30 seconds, release and repeat. This hug hits all the major muscle groups and is a great way to start your day, feeling even more rejuvenated!
- Sniff some mint or lavender. Use pure essential oils not fake fragrances. Scent a tissue or handkerchief and whenever life gets too crazy take a whiff. This promotes instant calm.
- Over the years I see thousands of women who do nothing but take care of their kids and family resulting in negligence of their own care resulting in feeling resentful unhealthy and overweight. Taking care of yourself, even in small ways is self care, It is not being selfish. When you take better care of yourself you become a much better person and/or parent in the long haul. And you won’t feel so stressed of course.
Again, readers what do you all do to relieve stress?
