Breakfast – Is it Really That Big of a Deal?

Nutritionists have long been telling us that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and that you should have breakfast like a king, lunch like a commoner and dine like a pauper.

For long the position on breakfast has been that if you are trying to lose weight then you must have breakfast and that you miss breakfast at your own peril.

However there is a counter view that says breakfast is not the most important meal of the day. The contention is that when you awaken in fasting mode and when all that you ate the previous day is wholly digested, the body is already in an alert and high energy mode.

It is contended that contrary to popular belief that says breakfast will kick start your metabolism, eating breakfast will actually have the opposite effect.

Use of Dietary Supplements on the Rise

More than one-half of U.S adults take dietary supplements, according to the CDC.

The new report, which appears in the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics’ Data Brief, looked at dietary supplement use among adults from 2003 to 2006, and compared it to use in 1988 to 1994.

“Dietary supplement use has increased in adults over age 20 since 1994, and we have over one-half of Americans taking one or more supplements a day,” says study researcher Jaime Gahche, MPH, a nutrition epidemiologist at the National Center for Health Statistics in Bethesda, Md.

Twist: Water with a twist!

The name Twist caught my eye since there is a little funky shop in my area by the same name. I soon realized Twist flavored water is as unique as my favorite little shop. My readers know that I keep my eyes peeled for organic and healthy alternatives to junk food and junk diet food. My hunt led me to Twist. Twist is manufactured by Talking Rain Beverage Company. I mention that only to point out how cool I think the name of the company is. Beyond a cool name of the company and the drink and beyond the cool logo, I expected that housed inside the unique bottle would be artificial flavors and artificial sugars.

Vegetarians May Need to Boost Omega-3s, B-12

Vegetarians have a reputation for being ”heart healthy.” However, a new report says some vegetarians may be increasing their risk of heart problems from nutritional deficiencies in their diets.

Overall, meat eaters are still at higher risk of heart attacks and strokes compared to vegetarians, says researcher Duo Li, a professor of nutrition at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China.

But in his review of published articles from medical journals, he found that vegetarian diets are often lacking in some key nutrients. These include vitamin B12 and omega-3 fatty acids. The deficiencies were especially evident, he says, in vegans.
