Daily Pill Lowers Odds for Infection With HIV

TUESDAY, Nov. 23 (HealthDay News) — A pill a day cut the risk of HIV infection by almost 44% in those at highest risk for contracting the virus, namely sexually active gay and bisexual men, a new study finds.

The reduction in risk climbed to nearly 73% among study participants who took the pill, called Truvada, 90% of the time, the researchers added. Truvada is already available by prescription in the United States as a treatment for HIV-infected people.

The pill, which was tested in over 2,500 men at 11 sites in six countries worldwide, combines two HIV antiretroviral medications, emtricitabine (Emtriva) and tenofovir (Viread).

Experts are hailing the results as a big step in the worldwide effort to combat the spread of the HIV virus, which infected some 2.7 million people worldwide in 2008.

A Whopping 25% of Children on Diets in America!

13 Nov 2010 06:53 AM

Research on the subject of children dieting was found on an unlikely source, a coupon code site. The poll also revealed that 26% of children under the age of 12 were on diets.

Now you may ask just how many people responded to this poll on this coupon site. That is a valid question and one I wanted the answer to myself. The poll consisted of 6,523 parents of American children under the age of 12.

U.S. Obesity Rate May Hit 42% by 2050

FRIDAY, Nov. 5 (HealthDay News) — Despite reports that the rate of obesity among U.S. adults might be slowing down, a new projection from Harvard University and MIT suggests otherwise.

Instead, using a sophisticated model that views obesity like an infectious disease, the team predicts that adult obesity rates will rise for another 40 years before leveling out. And before reaching that plateau, 42% of adults will be obese, the team predict.

For the last few years, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has placed the adult obesity rate at 34%, with another 34% of Americans overweight but not obese.

“It’s definitely true that the percent of obese people has slowed down,” said study author Alison Hill, a graduate student in Harvard’s Program for Evolutionary Dynamics, Biophysics Program.
